Lately there’s so much going on in Washington that there’s hardly a moment to rest. DC has become such a vibrant city that there’s practically something to do almost every day. And while many of the events require a more tailored or dressy look, it’s always nice when you can be a bit more casual. Sure there’s the usual beachwear and the shorts and tee look attire but that’s not always a great look when hitting some of the new hotspots in town. Here’s how I up my Saturday attire for the city.
One of the classic looks for Washington men is the polo shirt and khaki pants combination. Most guys have these items in their closet. And the look typically functions as an easy business casual look for the summer or as I like to call it the lazy man’s outfit for a night on town. While it’s fine and a quick way to pull something together, there are ways to keep it fresh and amp up your Saturday attire for the city.
Let’s start with the khakis. Make sure you look for a trimmer fit. I’m not saying you have to go skinny leg. A relaxed fit can work really well however but try to stay away from having your pants too baggy. Baggy styles tend to look sloppier and can make you look bigger than you actually are.
Next up is you polo. Even though this summer we’ve seen a lot of camp shirts in bold prints but sometimes a classic polo is a great alternative to rock that Saturday attire for the city. Again fit is important; try to stay away from going too full. As with the pants, you don’t want the fit to be too baggy. For those who want a step up from the polo shirt is the johnny collar. This is essentially the polo without the buttons.
Now that we have the basics, how do you elevate this style to give this Saturday attire in the city more character?
- Swap out the polo shirt for a johnny collar. While it’s not much of a change but the johnny collar can fell a little dressier.
- Add a blazer. If your polo is a solid color, look for your blazer to be in a bold print or geometric pattern. If your shirt has a bolder print, go with a navy blazer. For the more adventurous, make that blazer double breasted.
- Grab a great pair of statement shoes. A pop of color can add some nice contrast to a look. While the boat shoe is a popular choice, try something a little different. I’m digging the FlyRoam collection from Timberland. These shoes.
- Don’t forget the accessories such as a straw hat or great pair of sunnies. Not only are they fashionable but the can be functional too. Hats and sunnies can help protect against harmful UV rays.
