It is not difficult to create a perfect date night look. Washington can be hot this time of year so many places around town relax their unwritten dress code rules. While shorts, athletic wear and even swimwear seem to be the norm, they are not always the best fashion looks for a night out on the town especially if the evening calls for something a little dressier.
Even though it’s summer, the invitations to events, nights at the theater and even a romantic date night are still many of the things that DC residents enjoy in spite of the sweltering summer weather. It is these occasions where your business attire might be too businesslike. You’ll want something with a little more pizzazz and your typical weekend wear might be a little too casual. My date night included taking in a show at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The elegant space showcases some of the best performances in DC and I wanted to look sharp.
You can up your game by adding a lightweight blazer to your wardrobe. Look for linens and cottons. Worn with a nice dress shirt and jeans, you’ll have a great look for a date night or other special evening. Despite the summer heat, it still tends to be cooler in the evenings and most DC buildings are well air conditioned so you can be quite comfortable in a blazer. Plus for date night, you’ll have jacket to offer up and look like a hero should your date get cold.
For my date night look, I chose a white cotton blazer. I like white for summer and adding bright color underneath. The solid white blazer allowed me to play with color in my shirt, tie and accessories. I wore it over a thin checked lavender dress shirt and added a multi colored pocket square. The colors of my pocket square really popped against the blazer bringing out the lavender in my shirt as well as green, which was in my tie. The lavender and green worked well together and created a bold color combination for my date night look.
I chose a pair of jeans instead of slacks for my date night look. If you’re concerned that denim in the summer might be too hot, look for lighter weight denims, which you can find this denim in a multitude of washes. I like a medium to darker rinse to give the look a dressier feel. Rounding out my date night attire was a pair of brown suede shoes. A pair of white sneakers would also work well with this look. The shoes along with the accessories (tie, pocket square, socks tie bar and watch) from the monthly Harrison Blake subscription box helped create the perfect date night look.
