I’m finally putting up my last look from New York Fashion Week. Again, I opted for a more casual style to make it through the day. Although I opted to go tieless for a second day in row, I was still rocking a tailored look. For day 3 it was only 3 shows for me: Mark Cross, Romeo Hunte and Grungy Gentleman.
Mark Cross featured some amazing bags. The upscale leather goods company has been making a comeback and has focused more attention on their men’s line. There were definitely some bags I had my eye on. Over at Romeo Hunte, the designer focused on combining outerwear with swimwear, an interesting take on streetwear. Lastly Grungy Gentleman, a favorite of professional athletes, continued to appeal to the sports fan in all of us. They debuted the Grungy Gentleman X New Era collection, in partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Major League Baseball (MLB). Personally there were some pieces using their signature 6 stripe wave that caught my eye.
During my New York stay this time, I bunked with two of my friends. Tip #1: It’s easier to navigate Fashion Week if you can coordinate with a few friends. However our space was pretty tight. Just imagine the amount of luggage for fashion bloggers during Fashion Week! That meant event tighter quarters.
Normally, I like to hang my looks once I get settled into my hotel. For this trip that wasn’t really an option so I was destined to live out of my suitcase. I was pretty worried that my clothes would be wrinkled which would mean spending time with a iron. (To me ironing is a fate worse than death.) Tip #2: Travel with a steamer, it’s great for removing wrinkles. And sometimes a hotel iron isn’t in the best condition.
If you know me, you know I’m not very big on atheleisure wear. I think they work really well for some people but it’s really not my aesthetic unless I am actually working out. However some of the fabrics used are ideal for travel. Fortunately, my blazer and pants were made of fabrics normally reserved for atheleisure. Tip #3: Look for clothes that are “travel ready”. A lot of designers and brands such as Hugo Boss and Theory are incorporating travel suits in their collections which are crease resistant, stain-, dust-, and bacteria-repellent.
Final thoughts.
One of the reasons I like covering New York Fashion Week Men’s is that it’s pretty accessible living in Washington. It’s a chance to give my readers and primarily men of Washington, a sneak peak at upcoming trends and emerging designers that they might not otherwise hear about.
What struck me this season, was that it seemed that the amount of shows was smaller than in previous seasons. In the past we’d see shows by more recognizable names by DC standards such Hugo Boss, Suit Supply, Theory, Perry Ellis, Nautica, Joseph Abboud and John Varvatos. Mixed in with those would be some of my favorites such as Brett Johnson and Zachary Prell as well as a host of designers I would just discover. Combining these with designers DC men have never heard of made for a compelling season.
Men continue to become more aware of their fashion and style so the market for men’s fashion continues to grow. This seems to across all areas of fashion whether you’re more casual or lean towards the tailored classics is continuing to grow. It’s my hope that New York Fashion Week Men’s will continue to be a viable avenue to get that message across.
