Since the inception of New York Fashion Week Men’s, New York Men’s Day has been the official start of the week. While the number of designers and brands who show during Fashion Week has drastically dwindled, New York Men’s Day continues to remain strong with its cadre of brands and designers showcasing their looks in one setting. For the first half of the day 5 designers presented their looks. Returning designers were Timo Weiland and David Hart while Le Tigre, Mined on Denim and Apotts made their debuts
Le Tigre
Le Tigre originally launched back in 1977 as a less pretentious version of the preppy look. The company relaunched in 2019 and is back with big bold logos and colors. While there is a slight nod to the preppy look of yore, the look is a more updated street version for today.
David Hart
Perenniel favorite, David Hart was back again this time showing under the name R. Mutt. In German, “armut’ means poverty. The “R Mutt” may be a play on words but this collection depicts anything but poverty. Especially if you noticed the looks are styled with Christian Louboutins. In looking at this collection, you get a sense of the David Hart history with nods to pieces from previous collections.
Timo Weiland
When we saw Timo Weiland last season, he was all about bright bold colors and it looks like this will continue for him for Fall/Winter 2020. It’s kind of a breath of fresh air. Who says you have to wear dark fall colors when the seasons change? A pop of color or pops of color can be chase away the winter doldrums.
Mined on Denim
Eden Slezin has had many careers before settling into establishing his brand, Mined on Denim. It is his deliberate intention that his designs do no further harm to the environment. But that doesn’t mean his looks are retreads or boring. He wants his pieces to be work of art. Take for instance the weaved vest. At first glance you’d assume the intricate pattern was crafted in leather. In actuality, it’s actually reworked old tires treads. Talk about sustainability.
Apotts Collection
Along with Le Tigre and Mined on Denim, Aaron Potts’ Apotts Collection is the third newcomer to New York Men’s Day. His collections are designed to be unisex as well as transseasonal. We loved the fuller pants and oversized smocks. While black was the predominant color, the use of greens, grays and golds were a nice way to accentuate the pieces.
