I’ve had the opportunity to go backstage on several shows. During the last New York Fashion Week Men’s, I peeked behind the curtain at the Grungy Gentleman show. Grungy Gentleman is one of those shows that I look forward to every season. It’s not just a fashion show but it’s a party. The designer Jace Lipstein knows how to create a festive atmosphere to show off his latest creations.
Most lovers of fashion love attending a fashion show. There’s something exciting about seeing a designer’s looks strutting down the runway. It’s fun to imagine the possibilities of where these fashions can take you. Whether it’s a local department store, charity event or the mega shows that occur in fashion meccas like Paris, Milan and New York, there’s something magical about a runway show.
Tomorrow is the start of New York Fashion Week Men’s and it’s one of those times that those in attendance can go into fashion show overload. Buyers, writers, editors and influencers trek all over town to see the latest looks from brands and designers seeing as many as 10 to 20 shows a day. For many, it’s a job or a chore and can sometimes take these unique experiences for granted.
As I write this, I’m reminded of the line from The Devil Wears Prada whenever Andy complains about working for Miranda Priestley, “A million girls would kill for this job.” While many insiders seem to be over the Fashion Week experience, there are millions who would give their right arm to attend any one of the events for the week. Admittedly sometimes running across town trying to catch one of many shows I sometimes feel the overload. However I feel so fortunate to be able to see a variety of shows. I consider it an honor to be invited to the party.
What amazes me is all of the work that goes into producing a show. Especially when that show lasts for such a short time. Think about it. A show is considered long if it lasts 20 minutes and others can breeze by in about 7. And to get to that presentation there’s so much that needs to go into before hand. Sometimes it almost seems that the designs are an afterthought. Attending a show is one thing but to see what goes on backstage helps to give an even better appreciation of the final presentation. Using last season’s Grungy Gentleman’s show, I thought it would be nice to give just a glimpse on what goes on backstage.
The affable Jace Lipstein’s designs feature a signature six stripe wave that he infuses into his mostly casual wear pieces along side tailored looks. He has a knack for combining streetwear, athletic wear and even tailored pieces into one cohesive look. The focus seems to be on comfortable dressing and that makes his collection a favorite among professional athletes. It is not uncommon to see several athletes or other celebrities walking the runway during his shows.
On Wednesday, June 5th, Lipstein will present his Spring/Summer 2020 show. I’m looking forward to seeing what he has in store for Grungy Gentleman. Until that time, enjoy images of his previous collection.
