It’s finally that time of the year. The temperatures are getting warmer and we’ve hit spring. People are ready to bring out their spring fashions. Lighter brighter colors seem to help usher in the new season.  And if you’re following the trends, you already know what colors to expect. Back in September of 2021, the Pantone Color Institute had already forecasted the must have colors for the season. According to their list, colors like spun sugar, innuendo, daffodil, basil and dahlia should be all the rage. These exotic colors translated for the common person simply mean light blue, pink, yellow, green and purple. And yet missing from the list is black. So that begs the question, “How to wear black for spring?”

How to wear black for spring

Technically black is not a color but a shade but that’s not important. For our conversation, we will consider it a color. And just because it didn’t make the popular colors for the season, it does not mean that black is not an option for spring. For many, black is a year-round staple. Many women have their little black dress at the ready for that special occasion. And while men don tuxedos in a multitude of colors, it is that classic black tux that is always on trend.

Before getting into how to wear black for spring, it is important to note the drawback of wearing such a dark shade as temperatures rise. Black absorbs heat. As a result, wearers of black can be hotter than if wearing lighter colors. However, for many that’s not necessarily a deterrent especially during the spring when temperatures can be so temperamental. For some an all-black look is appropriate any time of year.

If all black is your choice, opt for lighter materials when picking fabrics. Choose cotton, linen or sheer fabrics (for those bolder folks). Another option, such as my look, is to feature it along with brighter bold colors. Try showcasing it with the Pantone colors of the season like innuendo, daffodil and dahlia (pink, yellow and purple!). Those colors really pop against a black backdrop. It’s okay to step outside the box when designing a look. I mean, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking!”

About the location

My look was shot alongside one of the most Instagrammed in Washington. The bold colors really help the black stand out as well as highlight the colors in my shirt. The iconic Love mural is located in Blagden Alley in northwest Washington. The alley is a hidden gem across from the Washington Convention Center. The mural was created by Lisa Marie Thalhammer whose work is featured all over the DMV. Last year she was commissioned to create a piece for the National Building Museum for pride month. This temporary piece of art was a 20,000 square foot lawn art mural to promote social distancing. Her most recent piece can be seen at the National Landing Metro Stop in Crystal City.
