Last Saturday was the 7th Diner en Blanc in Washington DC. And I know what you’re thinking. “It’s a been there done that experience.” Or “why pay to go to a party I have no idea where it is and I have to bring everything?” Or maybe you consider the event too exclusive and frivolous. But I have to tell you, the idea of a secret pop-up picnic held in an iconic location is really something to admire.
This year’s Diner en Blanc has been one of the bright spots in what has been a tough year for many people. The ability to come together and mingle even if just for a little while is something to celebrate. In my opinion, this event is one of the most diverse events held anywhere in the city. People are friendly and eager to meet each other. You might not know the people sitting next to you at the start of the night but by the end of the evening, you might just find lifelong friends. It’s one of the events in Washington where people of all backgrounds, races, religion and sexual orientation can come together, have a good time and not feel threaten by one another.
Forget a wine opener? Your neighbor will lend you theirs. Bring too much food? Somebody else didn’t bring enough and the spirit of sharing kicks in. Don’t know how to Wobble or do the Cupid Shuffle? Don’t’ worry. There’s always someone willing to show you the moves. That’s what I love most, the Diner en Blanc camaraderie!
And those that totally embrace the Diner en Blanc experience, embrace it wholeheartedly. And this year, attendees really brought their A game to make it a spectacular experience. From the elaborate tablescapes that took months to plan and seconds to construct along with the delectable menus that made me gain 20 pounds just looking at them the partygoers really know how to do a picnic! But the highlight was the fashion. Although dress code was all white, these year’s guest showcased their flair for fashion. As the DCFashion Fool this is one of my favorite parts of the day. Scroll through the gallery and take a look at this year’s fashions. Hopefully it will give you some ideas for next year’s party. Hope to see you there!
