It’s so good to be out an about again. However that means dressing up again. I’ve tried to build a wardrobe from things that I have had over time. For my first outing returning as the Man about DC, it was only natural that I would be hitting ResidentsDC, one of the city newly Michelin awarded restaurants. For those that don’t know, not only does the guide award coveted stars (1 – 3 rating) but it also issues a Bib Gourmand rating. This designation means good food at a moderate price and was recently bestowed on ResidentsDC. Now It also means it’s harder to get a reservation!
On one of the Washington’s first warm spring days, I met Simply Sylvia DC at the city’s newest hot spot for a nice leisurely brunch. The floral motif made the perfect setting for two people who never shy away from a camera. But was the food good as well? Well I devoured my avocado toast in no time flat. For light brunch fare and a great tasty cocktail, this is the ideal spot to catch up with an old friend and enjoy a good meal.
To meet Sylvia, I was required to wear something nice. Having nothing new for spring, I did my shopping out of my own closet. Everything I’m wearing is from previous seasons. It goes to show that classic pieces can be worn from year to year. While it’s cool to go out and get new things, I like the idea of building a closet with items that can be worn over time. If you’re looking to build a wardrobe or just want to copy my look, I’ve pulled together some pieces that are available now that you can have in your closet at the ready for the future. (BTW stay tuned on this site, I will be having my new closet reveal in upcoming weeks!)
Create the look/Build a wardrobe
First up is the jacket. It’s always nice to have a good lightweight jacket. A cool jacket completes a look, protects against an unexpected chill and is perfect for traveling. Opt for one with a hood. I’ve had mine for several years and it’s the actually the jacket I’ve traveled the most with. It does have a hood that actually zips into the collar. You check this one out as an alternative or this in a sporty camel color.
For the shirt and sweater, you can never go wrong with the classic blue and white. It’s a combination that looks fantastic year over year. Look for a bold print for the shirt with a simple crewneck over it and you’ll have a sharp look. My shirt is long sleeve however a short-sleeved shirt (like this) would work just as well. My pants are a bit slouchy and oversized. After being in the house in sweats for so long, I’m kind of used to the idea of comfort. If you’re looking for an alternative to mine, try these here , here or here.
I you want to build a wardrobe, don’t forget the accessories. Shoes, sunglasses and a great bag help to finalize a well put together look. It’s all about the attention to details. People don’t know why but there’s something that draws people in when a full look is on point! The new trend, even with guys, is to carry a status bag. Logo bags are all the rage and while I may have fallen victim to this, there’s also something to be said about understated elegance. My bag is from several seasons ago. You can find the current version: here. But if you’re looking to save a few bucks you should head over to The Real Real. Here are some of my other favorites: Hook and Albert, Away and Coach.
To splurge or steal? That’s an option so here are my picks for sunglasses and shoes. My glasses are Dior so splurge or get the steal. For my shoes I’m wearing Christian Louboutin. In an upcoming post, I’ll show you how to get the red bottoms red. You want them?
